SLT-Mobitel drives sustainability into action by restoring schools and renewing hope

As part of its ongoing commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) priorities, SLT-Mobitel continues to drive impactful initiatives under its education pillar, empowering communities through access to safe and supportive learning environments. In line with this commitment, SLT-Mobitel recently undertook the restoration of Anuradhapura’s Morakewa Vidyalaya and Thuruvila Primary School, which were badly damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, helping students and teachers return to normalcy while contributing to long-term community development.

The damage caused to Morakewa Vidyalaya and Thuruvila Primary School left hundreds of children without a safe space to continue their education. In Sri Lanka, education remains a cornerstone of daily life, serving as a source of hope, stability, and future opportunity for families and communities.

The renovations carried out at Morakewa Vidyalaya and Thuruvila Primary School have transformed the schools into safe and welcoming learning environments. With the completion of these improvements and reopening of facilities in February, students were able to return to schools and continue their academic activities in a secure and refreshed setting.

For SLT-Mobitel, the refurbishment aimed to achieve more than simply repairing the structures that facilitate learning. The company understands restoring these schools re-establishes routine, safety, and hope for the futures of the students and their teachers. The project directly benefitted hundreds of children who now have access to safe classrooms, functioning facilities, and the stability needed to learn and grow. Furthermore, it shows the children their education is valued and matters to the wider Sri Lankan community.

SLT-Mobitel understands that the education of young minds is a national responsibility and the cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s social progress, digital inclusion, and community resilience. Restoring these schools after disasters such as Cyclone Ditwah is part of a broader national recovery and education initiative, with the central goal of rebuilding lives and empowering communities.

The project was carried out with the support of Northern Province Governor Wasantha Jinadasa. It highlighted how public and private partnerships can align together under ESG principles to enact social responsibility, environmental awareness, and good governance.
