Kelani Shakthi 10th Anniversary celebrations to be held at University of Jaffna

A well-known and unique CSR program titled ‘Kelani Shakthi’, conducted in the Jaffna peninsula, will celebrate its 10th anniversary on 12 June under the patronage of Vice Chancellor and Senior Professor S. Srisathkunaraja; Faculty of Engineering Dean Dr. A. Kaneswaran, Faculty of Engineering Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Head Professor T. Thiruvaran, Kelani Cables PLC AGM Ralph Rajasundaram, AGM Dr. Suranga Pathirana, Brand Development Assistant Manager Kassapa Yatawatte, Kelani Saviya and Kelani Shakthi CSR Co-Founder and Coordinator Jayantha Wijesinghe, and Kelani Saviya Alumni Association President G.D.K. Samaranayake.

The passing-out ceremony for 55 students from the 6th batch and 68 students from the 7th intake of Kelani Shakthi will take place at the event, marking the ceremonial 10th anniversary at the Faculty of Engineering, Kilinochchi premises.

During the last ten years, the Kelani Shakthi program has been extended twice by both entities due to the high demand from the people of the Jaffna peninsula, emphasizing its timely importance. The one-year comprehensive program conducted at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna, imparts electrical technical skills to school leavers and novices in the peninsula, offering thorough knowledge in domestic and industrial wiring.

The Kelani Shakthi concept was introduced to the University of Jaffna by Professor A. Atputharajah (Professor, University of Jaffna and currently the Vice Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya) and Kelani Saviya CSR program Co-Founder Jayantha Wijesinghe, launched at the University of Peradeniya in 2007. The Kelani Shakthi MoU was initially signed in 2014 by Kelani Cables Former MD Mahinda Saranapala, and then Vice Chancellor, Professor Vasanthi Arasaratnam, at the Kelani Cables auditorium, in the presence of a distinguished gathering.

Kelani Cables CEO Dr. Anil Munasinghe, and Professor T. Thiruvaran highlighted that the University of Jaffna, in collaboration with a business entity, is conducting a program like “Kelani Shakthi” for the first time in its history. Furthermore, Kelani Shakthi, being conducted continuously for ten years, stands as a testament to its great success.

Professor A. Atputharajah, who designed the Kelani Shakthi program content, has been the driving force behind the success of this unique CSR initiative. Course Coordinator Professor T. Thiruvaran, and Visiting Lecturer A. Anopradeepan, have been conducting the program since 2015.
