Clarence Wijewardena
Growing up, the music of the legendary Clarence Wijewardena was a constant presence in our home, thanks to my father being a huge fan. The timeless melodies of Clarence captured my heart from childhood. “Duwa ma wage,” “Duwani surathal,” and “Dilhani duwani” were much appreciated key highlights back in the day at our home during the 90s, echoing through the halls with a sense of nostalgia. Years later, when my son was born, the very same music took on a new meaning. “Kiri muhuda kalabala” and “Dileepa podi puthu” became often sung lullabies by my father to his grandson. Likewise, Clarence’s music, in many ways, has continued to touch hearts across generations.
The movie trailer for “Rhythm of the Guitar” immediately caught my attention and quickly made its way to the top of my must-watch list with my family. Directed by the late Theja Iddamalgoda and produced by Thusitha Wijayasena, this musical drama unfolded the life and career of the legendary musician, Clarence Wijewardena. The film stars Damith Wijayathunga, Nihari Perera, Saranga Disasekara, and Dinakshie Priyasad, portraying Clarence Wijewardena, Sheela Wijewardena, Annesley Malewana, and Indrani Perera, respectively.
Starting the band as Moonstones, hailing from the city of gems, Ratnapura, they went on to light up the entire country with their music and melodies. With Annesley Malewana documenting their story, the film unveils their journey from Moonstones to Super Golden Chimes with all the ups and downs they experienced along the way. Withering the storm of Sri Lankan musical seas was not a rosy path back in the 70s.
Many of Clarence’s songs were often inspired by real-life events, and the movie beautifully intertwines these with his love story with Sheela, his beloved wife. The movie reminds us how many of Clarence’s songs were intentionally crafted with meaning. While the storyline has been slightly adapted with a modern touch, the result is both respectful and commendable.
The revolution sparked through a new wave of music turned a whole new page in the history of Sri Lankan music, alongside the celebrated contributions of the trio – Clarence Wijewardena, Annesley Malewana, and Indrani Perera. As much as this movie is a tribute to the king of Sri Lankan pop music, it is a must watch, promising movie to everyone who loves and cherishes his music. The remarkable hits by Super Golden Chimes will continue to live in our hearts forever and for many generations to come.
