Thiru says not attacked in Rameswaram

United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) parliamentarian Nirupama Rajapaksa’s husband Thirukumaran Nadesan yesterday denied Indian media reports which said he was attacked by a group of activists yesterday at Rameswaram.

He said a pro-LTTE group led by a person called ‘Seaman’ launched a demonstration during a visit to the Rameswaram Temple.

The Hindu Online reported that Nadesan was attacked in Rameswaram by a group of activists.

It said the activists belonging to the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and Nam Tamilar Iyakkam (NTI) are said to have heard about his arrival and surrounded a house at Nadutheru, where he was performing a pooja, and shouted slogans against Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The policemen, who were posted to provide security him, intervened and removed the agitators from the scene.

Although it was not known immediately about the nature of his injuries, he was known to have been dealt heavy blows by the agitators.

The policemen hurriedly escorted him to a hotel from the house and later had vacated the hotel under heavy security.

Nirupama Rajapaksa is the niece of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, The Hindu added.
