Rice to be imported to control price hike

Cabinet has approved a proposal to import rice through private importers to control the price hike that took place last month.

Up to 113,000 metric tonnes of rice was imported previously, and though a slight reduction in price was observed, stocks available in the market are still insufficient. Accordingly, 20,000 metric tonnes of rice will be imported monthly through the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) and a buffer stock of 100,000 metric tonnes will be maintained with the CWE and through a government to government basis. A proposal to sell the imported rice at Sathosa outlets through the open market was also approved by Cabinet. (HK)
