NCCSL to host seminar on bilateral trade between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh

The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka will hold a presentation/discussion on ‘Bilateral Trade between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh’ on Wednesday, 3 April 2013 from 3 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at the new chamber auditorium (Lotus), 450, D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha, Colombo 10.

The guest speakers will be H.E.M. Sufiur Rahman, High Commissioner of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Sri Lanka and F.M. Borhan-Uddin, Counsellor of the High Commission of Bangladesh. They will speak on the current business trends, trade potential, opportunities for export, import, investment/ and other services available for Sri Lankans in Bangladesh.

According to statistics available, Lanka’s exports to Bangladesh have increased by around 150% during the period 2006-2011. Similarly, the value of imports from Bangladesh has also increased by 100% in 2011 compared to 2010. In 2011, Sri Lanka-Bangladesh bilateral trade increased to 22 million US dollars representing an 83% increase from 2007 trade levels.

Sri Lanka’s main exports to Bangladesh are cotton, mineral fuels, mineral oils and products, bituminous substances, rubber and rubber products, enzymes, miscellaneous chemical products, special woven fabrics and textile fabrics. Sri Lanka imports from Bangladesh include woven garments, pharmaceuticals, jute yarn and twine, knitwear, textile fabrics, sacks and bags, plastic goods, cotton yarn, iron chain, leather, engineering products and furnace oil. The participants will get an opportunity to meet the officials of the Bangladesh High Commission and clarify any trade related matters in doing business with Bangladesh.
