Laws on gold worn when leaving the country relaxed

The Government has revoked a law recently applied limiting the amount of gold jewellery that can be worn by citizens when leaving the country for travelling abroad. On 28 November, Sri Lanka restricted amount of gold jewellery worn when leaving the country after a group of Sri Lankans were arrested at Chennai airport under suspicion of smuggling gold since they were wearing excessive jewellery. The Customs limited the weight of the jewellery worn by a man to five pounds and to 15 pounds of gold for a woman. However, the Government has decided to revoke this law with immediate effect. According to new rules, departing travellers who are permanent residents of Sri Lanka are permitted to carry in-person or bona-fide personal baggage articles of personal jewellery not in commercial quantities, on bring-back basis. However, the spokesman of Sri Lanka Customs Lesley Gamini said that still the wearing of crude, semi-manufactured or unfinished gold jewellery is banned when travelling abroad.
