Etisalat supports digital revolution in Sri Lanka

For the second consecutive year, Etisalat Lanka sponsored Sri Lanka’s Social Media Day (#SMDayCMB) – to mark Mashable Global Social Media Day held on 30th June every year to celebrate social media and bring together new technology enthusiasts from around the country. Mashable, the largest independent online news site dedicated to covering digital culture, social media and technology, launched Social Media Day in 2010. Mashable Social Media Day is a global event that celebrates the technologies that connect people across the world and this year, events took place on six continents. Sri Lanka’s Social Media Day drew a crowd more than 200 people and consisted of networking sessions, speeches and an award ceremony to recognise those who had made a difference in Sri Lanka’s social media sphere, and a panel discussion to share expert perspectives on Social Media in the country. Commenting on their support of the event Etisalat Senior Manger Marketing Gamika De Silva said: “This is the second time we came in as the main sponsor for the event. Social Media has now gone beyond just another method people use to interact and has become a vital part of people’s lives today. By acknowledging a day such as this, we are providing an opportunity to connect with different segments of society cutting across age, gender, ethnicity, race and as a global community.” The panel consisted of SLIM President and Etisalat Senior Marketing Manager, Gamika De Silva, Neo@Ogilvy Head of Digital Media Amitha Amarasinghe, Blogger/Founder of Yamu.lk Indi Samarajiva, Needy Readers Co-Founder and Marketing Manager Lividul Witharana, Journalist/Blogger Megara Tegal and Artist/Actor/Song Writer Raini Charuka. Speeches were held on the topics “If only your press release could talk!” by Anjelo Fernando and “Social media for social good” by Founder of Educate Lanka Manjula Dissanayake. The award recipients for contributions to social media are as follows; Most Popular Meme Maker - Chathuranga Ekanayake, Chandeep Wijetunge and Sachithra Ediriweera; Most Popular Blogger – Supun Budhajeewa, Most Popular Video Blogger – Kushan and Srimal (Ukku Banda and Hichchi Malli), Lifetime Achievement Blogging – Indi Samarajiva, Lifetime Achievement Video Blogging – Jehan R and Contribution for Social Good – Sarvodaya Fusion.
