DIMO Batta handed over to Samurdhi beneficiaries

DIMO Batta vehicles were recently handed over to Samurdhi beneficiaries under the Divi Neguma project. These include recipients of Samurdhi stamps and also those who have elevated to the next level through the Samurdhi scheme.

The official handing over ceremony was held recently at the Divi Neguma Home Based Industrial Exhibition held at Gampaha under the patronage of Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda, Chief Minister of Western Province Prasanna Ranathunga, Deputy Minister of State Resources and Enterprise Development Sarath Gunarathna, Deputy Minister of Petroleum Industries Sarana Gunawardena, Chairman of DIMO Ranjith Pandithage, Deputy CEO of DIMO Gahanath Pandithage, General Manager of TATA Commercial Vehicles Vijitha Bandara and Director General of the  Samurdhi Authority R.G.B. Tilekesiri.

There are more than 1.5 million Samurdhi members and an additional 4.5 million indirect beneficiaries. Samurdhi beneficiaries now have access to owning a DIMO Batta through the 1327 Samurdhi Banks available island wide for a down payment of Rs. 100,000.

The Samurdhi Movement, which has the, ‘building of a prosperous Sri Lanka through a comprehensive development among disadvantaged groups in the society,’ as its mission has kept numerous progressive as a pilot project towards sustainable development. 

This programme has become a viable movement which has created a comparative revolution in the field of development, contributing to positive changes in the economic and social levels of low income families.

This programme is being implemented for the purpose of creating prosperous and beautiful hamlets and livelihood under the Mahinda Chintana and in accordance with the SAARC Charter for the elimination of poverty by the Samurdhi Authority of Sri Lanka.

The local poverty rate of 28.8 per cent that prevailed in the country during the inception of the Samurdhi Movement in 1996 has been reduced to 15 per cent and this fact bears testimony to the vital role played by Samurdhi as the principal mediator in the matter.
