CSR to be featured at 2014 Rotary District Conference today

The 2014 Rotary District Conference for Sri Lanka and Maldives on 21 February at the BMICH will comprise a special feature on ‘The Need for Effective Corporate Social Responsibility in Organisations Today’. There will be presentation by Sujeewa Mudalige – Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Suresh Shah – Director/Chief Executive Officer, Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC and Hilmy Cader, CEO of MTI Consulting. This will be followed by a panel discussion that will be chaired by Rotarian PDG Gehan Siribaddana. CSR is not a form of charity or philanthropy, a disguised marketing activity or a loss making enterprise. Instead, CSR needs to be viewed as a form of care and responsibility by all corporations in the actions they undertake. Further CSR should be a voluntary contribution based around the 3Cs – Currency, Commitment and Core Competencies – in improving lives, enhancing upward mobility and strengthening the social integration process. Corporations are part of society and their actions affect all living beings. The level of power and competencies that corporations have, how their resources can be utilised and applied, and the impact it can create towards the social challenges in society. These features possess great potential within the social integration process and should be engaged in a positive way. The time to act is now, before social issues escalate, especially with the global populations projected to increase by one billion over the next 12 years. Given these challenges and opportunities, there is an immediate need for the private sector to pool resources and engage with the Government and NGOs to promote the importance of social integration through CSR projects.
