Call for Papers: Forum on Sri Lanka’s Road to Sustainable Development

The United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2011. Encompassing economic, social, cultural and political processes, development is a process that envisages constant improvement of both the populace as a whole, and individuals that make up the sum parts of the whole. The development drive in Sri Lanka, post May 2009, has seen exponential investments in public infrastructure, tourism and urban development. The country appears to take great strides in the direction of overall economic development through infrastructure development, and one cannot argue with the notion that the citizenry of Sri Lanka as a whole can only gain from more airports, highways, ports, harbours and factories. This fulfils the right to development of peoples. At the same time, this development drive impinges on various rights of individuals, for example, the right to land. Is any development, good development? Whether the dichotomy between what we lose and what we gain through this process is justifiable, and how we can focus on human centred approaches to development, is the grave question which this forum aims to address, debate and answer. The Law and Society Trust (LST), in keeping with its theme of advocacy on human rights based approaches to development, is organising a forum to be held on 22 August 2014. The forum seeks to promote research and discussion on a broad list of themes related to the Human Rights Based Approaches to Development, and LST encourages comparative discussions across South Asia and beyond. Analytical and imaginative submissions from all sectors of society, public and private sector employees, students, journalists and those involved in development work, are encouraged and welcomed, in order to facilitate wide discussion and discourse on this timely and important topic, be it in traditional text format, or in the form of video or alternative media. They are also open to research papers and video/alternative media submissions that range beyond the listed themes in the attached Call for Papers but are within the overall topic, to be received by 30 July 2014, for consideration to be presented at the forum. The best submission will also be presented with a cash award of Rs. 10,000.
