Basil officiates at national celebrations of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa was Chief Guest at the National programme of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty held at Matara, Waligama Urban Council Hall yesterday.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year since 1993.

The United Nation (UN) designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries, particularly in developing countries - a need that has become a development focus. The theme for this year’s International Day for the Eradication ofPoverty - “Working together out of poverty” highlights the need for a truly global anti-poverty alliance, one in which both developed and developing countries participate actively.

Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Minister of youth Affairs and Skills Development Dallas Alahapperuma, Deputy Minister of Economic Development Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, MP Hemal Gunasekara, Director General of the Sri Lanka Samurdhi Development Authority Bandula Thilakasiri and Southern Provincial council members also participated at the event.
