Export Development Board (EDB) Chairman Mangala Wijesinghe has confirmed that Sri Lanka intends to apply for continued access under the next Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) framework, describing the scheme as a key pillar of the country’s export strategy.

“GSP+ has been extremely beneficial to Sri Lanka,” Wijesinghe said.

He noted that significant untapped export potential remains in the European market and said discussions with the country’s political leadership had produced encouraging signals regarding continued engagement with the EU trade preference regime.

“We have already discussed this matter with the country’s political leadership and have received positive signals,” he said.

Wijesinghe said Sri Lanka was willing to apply for the next phase of GSP+ in order to maintain and expand preferential market access for exporters.

“Therefore, Sri Lanka intends to continue benefitting from GSP+ and is willing to apply for the next period as well,” Wijesinghe added.
