SLCBCC sheds light on efforts to grow bilateral trade with China

The Sri Lanka China Business Corporation Council (SLCBCC) took several measures to develop trade, investment, and capacity development between Sri Lanka and China recently.

These initiatives are part of its new corporate strategy and ongoing engagements with Chinese trade chambers, aimed at supporting the Sri Lankan business community and understanding policy issues between the two countries.

Accordingly, SLCBCC recently met with the visiting Yunnan Government delegation and discussed ways to promote sustainable business and overcome challenges through friendly interactions and mutual trust between the two countries. SLCBCC and the Yunnan trade delegation also agreed to continue the current dialogue and the multi-sectoral cooperation between Chinese and Sri Lankan traders to bring greater benefits to both countries.

The Government delegation of Yunnan, headed by Deng Ruijiyu, Director of the foreign affairs division, Yunnan Provincial Department of Commerce, expressed its satisfaction over Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and explained a wide range of business opportunities available to Sri Lankan businesses in Yunnan province. He also invited SLCBCC members to take part in the 9th China-South Asia Exposition and 29th China Kunming Import and Export Fair in June 2025.

Commenting on the recent developments between China and Sri Lanka, SLCBCC President Indika Salgado said: “The framework agreement signed during President Anura Kumara Disanayake’s visit to Beijing is a significant moment in our historic relations with China. SLCBCC, as the oldest trade council established in Sri Lanka to promote bilateral economic relations with China, will certainly be guided by the strategic direction set by the agreement. We have already engaged in a constructive dialogue with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) to enable the business environment between the two countries. One such move is to design a mechanism to identify companies with good commercial behaviour in both countries and to create a credible trade platform for transactions.”

SLCBCC also hosted two Chinese delegations in the early part of this year in Colombo, led by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT – Guizhou chapter). Over 40 Chinese enterprises, representing diverse business interests, took part in B2B discussions. Among them were senior managers and directors of Chinese companies engaged in electrical, electronics, transport, apparel and textile, agriculture, real estate, etc. The delegation also consisted of buyers for Sri Lankan spices, tea, cocopeat, and minerals.
