A new three-storey multi-purpose building at the Sri Lanka Institute of Textile & Apparel (SLITA) was inaugurated yesterday, under the patronage of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunneththi, marking a Rs. 520 million investment aimed at strengthening skills development in the export-oriented garment sector.
The facility, constructed from 2024, is equipped with a 150-computer CAD laboratory, an art and fashion studio, auditorium, and library, creating what officials described as a modern learning environment for students and professionals entering the textile and apparel industry.
Handunneththi said the Government is seeking to reinforce the sector’s supply chain and position Sri Lanka as a regional education hub for internationally competitive garment manufacturing. The apparel industry remains one of the country’s largest sources of export revenue.
Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe and senior Ministry officials were also present at the ceremony.
