Sri Lanka’s reputation for quality and sustainable tea production received a significant international boost with Avissawella Tea Factory – Sithaka and Hidellana Tea Factory Ltd., both part of RTS Holdings Group, receiving prestigious recognition at the North American Tea Conference 2026, held in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada, from 22 to 24 September.
Avissawella Tea Factory – Sithaka secured second place in the Sri Lanka tea category of the international tea competition for its FBOP (Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe) black tea, highlighting the factory’s commitment to maintaining high standards throughout the tea manufacturing process. The recognition reflects the expertise of its workforce and the consistent quality of the fresh leaf, manufacturing, fermentation, drying and grading processes that contribute to producing a quality Ceylon Tea.
Adding another dimension to RTS Holdings’ international achievements, Hidellana Tea Factory Ltd., received a 2026 Sustainability Awards Recognition Certificate under the theme “A Sustainable Today – A Resilient Tomorrow.” The recognition acknowledges the factory’s initiatives in areas including environmental protection, resource efficiency, renewable energy, responsible production and engagement with tea-growing communities.
The dual recognition shows the growing importance of combining tea quality with sustainability in international markets, where consumers and buyers are increasingly conscious of environmental responsibility, sustainable supply chains and social impact.
The achievements also recognise the vital contribution of the smallholder tea growers, who supply fresh leaf to RTS Holdings’ factories. Their dedication, together with the commitment of factory employees and management, forms the foundation of the quality and reputation of the tea produced.
For RTS Holdings, these international recognitions represent more than individual awards. They are a reflection of the collective efforts of its employees, tea growers and industry partners, while reinforcing the importance of protecting and strengthening the globally respected “Ceylon Tea” identity.
The achievements of Avissawella and Hidellana demonstrate that Sri Lankan tea producers can continue to compete on the international stage not only through exceptional tea quality, but also through responsible and sustainable practices that contribute towards a more resilient future for the industry.
