The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved awarding the consultancy contract for Phase II of the Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project to M/s. Nippon Koei Ltd., a joint venture between M/s. Nippon Koei India Ltd., and Green Tech Consultants Ltd., of Sri Lanka.

The project aims to provide secure drinking water facilities to residents in the Divisional Secretariat divisions of Padaviya, Kahatagasdigiliya, Kebithigollewa, and Horowpathana, as well as parts of Rambawa and Medawachchiya, by sourcing water from the Yaan Oya Reservoir.

The initiative is being implemented with funding from the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

To select a consultant for supervising the construction works, six Japanese consultancy firms pre-qualified by JICA were invited to submit proposals under the quality and cost-based selection methodology in accordance with ODA loan guidelines. Two firms submitted proposals, which were evaluated on both technical and financial criteria.

“Based on the recommendations of the Consultancy Procurement Committee appointed by the Cabinet, the contract was awarded to M/s. Nippon Koei Ltd., at a total value of Japanese Yen 82.39 million and Rs. 332.01 million, excluding taxes,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said on Tuesday, announcing the decision at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing.

The consultancy will oversee construction to ensure that water supply facilities are developed efficiently and in compliance with project standards.

He highlighted that the project will significantly enhance access to safe drinking water in the region, benefiting thousands of residents and contributing to overall public health and development in northern Anuradhapura.
