In a remarkable leap from local acclaim to global recognition, Modern Pack Lanka Ltd., in partnership with SLINTEC, has won the WorldStar Award 2025 in the Sustainable Innovations Category, judged by a panel of 51 international experts. The award, presented by the World Packaging Organisation, is the highest global honour in the packaging industry, with this year’s competition drawing over 550 entries from more than 100 countries. The winning innovation transforms agricultural waste such as corn husk and rice straw into compostable, food-safe packaging. Developed by SLINTEC’s research team and successfully converted into scalable packaging solutions by the research and development team at Modern Pack Lanka, the product minimises water and chemical usage while replacing conventional plastic and paper-based materials. Made entirely from agro-waste, it represents a truly sustainable packaging breakthrough.
The innovation previously secured Gold at Lanka Star 2024, earning national recognition before capturing global attention in Milan. Modern Pack Lanka CEO Lahiru Wijerathna credited the visionary support of Chairperson Shea Wickramasingha, Director Nishka Wickramasingha and the Board of Directors, SLINTEC’s scientific leadership, the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging, and his passionate team at Modern Pack for this achievement. “This is more than an award, its proof of the commitment of Sri Lankan companies to lead the world in sustainable technology,” said Wijerathna. This win cements Sri Lanka’s position as a rising global leader in green packaging innovation and science-led industrial transformation.
