Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunneththi represented Sri Lanka at the 16th Annual Meeting of the New Champions hosted by the World Economic Forum from 24-26 June in Tianjin, People’s Republic of China.

This year’s forum titled “Entrepreneurship for a New Era”, has brought together over 1,700 participants from over 90 countries, including leaders from business, government, civil society, international organisations, media and academia, to share insights and drive action on shared challenges.

As global economies seek to adapt to shifting dynamics and growing sustainability imperatives, the 2025 WEF New Champions Meeting serves as a platform for dialogue, innovation and resilient partnerships across borders.

The Minister said that a high-level dialogue was held focusing on advancing public-private partnerships (PPPs) in natural resource management. He shared insights into Sri Lanka’s current governance and investment climate, highlighting reforms introduced by the new administration to combat corruption and encourage transparency.

Handunneththi also noted growing international interest in Sri Lanka’s reform trajectory and underscored the country’s potential as a strategic investment destination in South Asia.

One of the key discussions during the forum included the IGWEL: Business Oath for Advancing the New Geo-Economic Era, emphasising the importance of ethical business practices and collaboration in navigating today’s complex global economy.

On the sidelines of the conference, Minister Handunnetti held a bilateral meeting with Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Hassan Elkhatib, exploring avenues for mutual cooperation and investment opportunities between the two countries.

The Tianjin meeting, often dubbed ‘Summer Davos’ is focused this year on scaling technologies, advancing sustainable business models and driving inclusive growth, particularly in Asia.

A group of ministers, governors and officials representing various countries participated in this conference which include;
