Knuckles Spring Water bottled and marketed by CPC Lanka, a fully owned subsidiary of Cargills (Ceylon) PLC, has recently introduced Sri Lanka’s first tethered bottle cap to the market.

Sourced from natural springs in Sri Lanka’s central highlands and bottled at source, Knuckles Spring Water has long been recognised for its quality and purity. As another nature friendly initiative from KNUCKLES, to protect our planet, this introduction of the tethered cap marks a packaging innovation aimed at improving plastic waste management and supporting recycling efforts.

The tethered cap is designed to remain attached to the bottle after opening, reducing the likelihood of caps being discarded separately. Bottle caps are among the most commonly littered plastic items globally and frequently enter landfills and waterways due to their small size and low collection rates.

Even established waste interception systems, including ocean barriers and strainers, often face challenges in capturing small plastic items such as bottle caps. By ensuring the cap remains connected to the bottle, the design supports more complete collection and enhances the recyclability of the packaging.

This initiative is aligned with international sustainability developments, including regulations such as the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive, which mandates that plastic bottle caps remain attached to containers to reduce plastic pollution and improve recycling outcomes.

Beyond packaging innovation, Knuckles Spring Water continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental stewardship and community wellbeing through a range of sustainability initiatives. Within the Knuckles mountain range catchment area, information boards have been established to raise awareness on ecosystem conservation, while tree planting programmes are underway to support habitat restoration. The brand has also installed two Ocean Strainers in Boralesgamuwa and Wanathamulla to help prevent plastic waste from entering waterways, together with plastic collection bins placed in key locations to strengthen post-consumer waste recovery.

In addition to its environmental initiatives, the brand has extended support to communities during times of need. Following recent floods, Knuckles Spring Water donated 5-litre bottles to provide clean drinking water to affected families, reinforcing its commitment to community wellbeing.

The introduction of tethered caps represents a step towards more responsible packaging practices in Sri Lanka, with potential benefits for waste management systems, environmental protection, and resource efficiency.
