Investment Forum in Toronto highlights opportunities in Sri Lanka for Canadian investors

The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Toronto and the Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka conducted a virtual forum on Investment Opportunities in Sri Lanka on 18 June 2026, attended by approximately 40 members of the Sri Lankan diaspora and prospective investors in Canada.

Opening the event, Consul General Medhavi Peiris noted that the forum was organised in response to the increasing number of inquiries received from interested individuals, diaspora community regarding investing in Sri Lanka. She stated that the objective was to provide updated information on investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, address misconceptions, and facilitate direct engagement with relevant institutions.

Addressing the forum, Foreign Affairs Ministry Economic Affairs Bilateral Division Director General Manori Mallikaratchy, highlighted the importance of strengthening investment ties with the Sri Lankan diaspora and encouraged participants to explore opportunities in Sri Lanka. She also promoted Sri Lanka Expo 2027 as a key platform for investors and businesses.

BOI Director General Renuka Weerakone emphasised the importance of continued engagement with diaspora investors and reaffirmed the BOI’s commitment to supporting and facilitating investments.

Presentations by BOI Executive Director Priyanka Samaraweera, and Director - Investment Promotion, Ganga Palaketiya provided participants with an overview of investment opportunities across key sectors, structured projects, and updated information on incentives available to investors.

During the interactive discussion, participants expressed strong interest in investment opportunities in Sri Lanka and welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with officials. Several participants raised concerns regarding delays in obtaining approvals and regulatory clearances. BOI officials acknowledged these concerns and briefed participants on ongoing efforts to streamline procedures and improve investor facilitation services.

The forum underscored the growing interest among the Sri Lankan diaspora in contributing to the country’s economic development and highlighted the importance of continued dialogue to promote investment, address challenges, and strengthen economic partnerships.
