Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha visited the ongoing hybrid renewable energy project in Delft Island on 3 June. This project is currently implemented in the three islands of Delft, Analaitivu, and Nainativu off Jaffna in Sri Lanka.
The project is being implemented under grant assistance of $ 11 million from the Government of India and reaffirms India’s commitment to bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, as well as the human-centric nature of India’s development partnership initiatives in Sri Lanka.
The project combines solar, wind, and diesel generators with battery backup systems to deliver a reliable and integrated energy solution, with a total output capacity of nearly 4.3 MW. This addresses the energy needs of the people of these three islands, which are not connected to the national grid.
During the visit, the Indian High Commissioner reviewed the progress of the project at the Delft site and interacted with officials from the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA), the project contractor, and beneficiary communities.
He emphasised that the project stands as a symbol of the enduring and people-centric development partnership between India and Sri Lanka. He noted that India remains committed to supporting Sri Lanka’s sustainable development priorities through impactful grant projects that directly benefit local communities.
