India and Pakistan held a fresh round of unofficial ‘Track 2’ talks in Colombo and Bangkok earlier this week, focusing on crisis management and measures to prevent future military escalation, according to a report by Indian broadcaster WION News.

The report said delegates from both countries discussed strengthening crisis management mechanisms, alongside issues relating to terrorism and water, while exploring ways to translate the discussions into formal Government-level dialogue.

Track 2 diplomacy refers to unofficial discussions involving retired officials, former diplomats, academics, military personnel, and policy experts rather than serving government representatives.

According to WION, the meetings took place despite formal dialogue between India and Pakistan remaining suspended following heightened tensions after the May 2025 conflict triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack.

The report said several rounds of Track 2 discussions have been held in neutral venues in recent months, with Colombo and Bangkok hosting the latest meetings.

WION also reported that neither the Indian nor Pakistani Governments have publicly acknowledged the backchannel talks.
