At Hemas, environmental, social and governance thinking is not a checklist sitting alongside strategy. It is treated as part of how the Group grows, manages risk and creates value

By the end of FY2025/26, Hemas Holdings PLC had helped collect 2.9 million kilograms of plastic from the environment, a large amount of waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfills or waterways. This is not a statistic for an annual report. It is a marker of how Hemas has moved sustainability from the margins of the business to the center of it.

At Hemas, environmental, social and governance thinking is not a checklist sitting alongside strategy. It is treated as part of how the Group grows, manages risk and creates value.

Sustainability is also anchored in Hemas’ purpose of enriching lives.  This purpose is the lens through which the Group makes decisions - not just about what it does for communities, but about how it runs its businesses day to day.

Turning risk into strategy

Climate change, resource scarcity and shifting consumer expectations are reshaping every industry. Hemas chose to treat these as strategic questions, not just compliance ones. That thinking produced the Group’s Environmental Agenda 2030, built around two priorities: responsible plastic consumption and efficient use of natural resources.

The most visible commitment under this agenda is plastic neutrality by 2030 - recovering as much plastic as it puts into the market. The 2.9 million kilograms collected so far is real progress toward a circular economy. Alongside this, Hemas is improving water efficiency and expanding renewable energy use across its operations, building resilience into the business itself.

Where profit and purpose meet

Sustainability at Hemas is not confined to environmental metrics. It shows up in how the Group thinks about social impact - not as scattered good deeds, but as an extension of what its businesses already do well.

The Hemas Outreach Foundation is expanding access to early childhood education. The Ayati National Centre supports children with disabilities. Across healthcare and consumer businesses, initiatives are improving health and wellbeing at scale. What ties these together is a simple truth: Hemas gets more out of its social investments by using its own expertise, products and reach, rather than treating social impact as something separate from the business.

Commercial success and societal progress are not competing goals. Done right, they reinforce each other.

The real test ahead

Sustainability leadership will not come from a long list of activities - it will come from embedding its principles into the way businesses are run, and focusing on the few things that create the most impact. At Hemas, that is the direction of travel: sustainability not as a department, but as a discipline running through the business and staying true to the purpose of Enriching Lives.
