A Haldanduwana resident has written to several bodies, including international seafood certifiers and the Ministry of Justice, raising alleged environmental issues at Taprobane Seafood Group’s Haldanduwana/Dankotuwa facility.
In a complaint dated 6 October, 2026 to Assurance Services International (ASI) and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), copied to auditor Control Union and the Ministry of Justice, Oliver Klaus Jahnel alleged environmental non-compliance at the facility. He sought a suspension of the group’s ASC certifications pending an independent audit. He has also raised the matter with the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA), which runs the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program.
In his complaint, Jahnel alleged environmental offences and illegal site modifications at the Haldanduwana facility, and said he had video evidence of slurry and effluent being transported from the site. He said he had submitted physical, photographic and video evidence during an audit interview with Control Union on 2 October.
He argued that the processing facility is an integral part of the group’s supply chain, so any non-compliance there would undermine the integrity of its certified products, and that it should be audited in full against environmental, legal and community compliance criteria.
