The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting last week approved the continuation of the ‘Suraksha’ Student Insurance Program for the 2025–2026 academic year, along with a series of amendments to expand coverage and improve access.
The Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Ministry has strengthened the Suraksha Student Insurance Program through a new agreement with Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Ltd., aiming to ensure that students can continue their education uninterrupted despite health challenges.
The initiative, which currently covers around four million students in Government schools, Government-approved private schools, Pirivenas, and assisted special schools, provides health insurance, accident coverage, and life insurance.
Cabinet approval was granted for amendments proposed by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, in her capacity as the Education Minister, to enhance the program for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa noted that the updated framework increases benefits for low-income families, raises the coverage for spinal correction and cochlear devices, and provides financial support for long-term medication for critical illnesses.
In addition, five additional critical illnesses including Pneumothorax, Encephalitis, Thalassemia, Hereditary Spherocytosis, and Sickle Cell Anemia have been included under the program’s coverage.
The annual income threshold for the low-income category eligible for parent death benefits has been raised from Rs. 180,000 to Rs. 240,000. In addition, benefits of up to Rs. 75,000 will now be provided for Scoliosis Braces used to correct spinal deformities and Cochlea Equipment, while students requiring long-term medication for critical illnesses or seven other identified ailments will receive benefits up to Rs. 20,000.
From 1 September 2025, students and guardians will have the flexibility to submit claim applications at any regional office of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited, simplifying the process and improving accessibility.
He said these enhancements aim to expand protection for previously uncovered illnesses and streamline the claims process, ensuring the program reaches its full potential in supporting student health and education.
