Ahead of the Local Government polls, the Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved the provisions of fertiliser subsidies to farmers cultivating during the 2025 Yala season.
Accordingly, the Government will subsidise fertiliser costs as, Rs. 25,000 per hectare for paddy cultivation, with a maximum subsidy covering of two hectare per farmer and Rs. 15,000 per hectare for other field crops grown on paddy land, as determined during seasonal meeting also capped at two hectares per farmer. The proposal to this effect submitted by Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
On 6 March, President Anura Kumara Disanayake directed officials to take necessary steps to guarantee that farmers receive adequate fertiliser supplies on time during the Yala season, ensuring an efficient and productive cultivation
season.
He made these remarks during a discussion held with officials from the Agriculture, Livestock, Land, and Irrigation Ministry along with representatives from related institutions, at the Presidential Secretariat.
Emphasising the critical role of fertiliser in enabling the timely commencement of farming activities, Disanayake insisted on the need for a continuous supply of fertiliser to agricultural lands, ensuring that farmers do not face any shortages. The meeting also focused on assessing the current fertiliser requirements for paddy cultivation and other agricultural activities during the Yala season.
The President reiterated the importance of ensuring a smooth start to the Yala season, stressing the necessity of removing any obstacles or difficulties that could hinder farming operations.
