The All Ceylon Egg Producers Association yesterday announced that egg prices will be increased with effect from today (20), with the retail price of a white egg rising to Rs. 41 and a red egg to Rs. 42.
Association President Sarath Rathnayake, speaking at a media briefing in Kuliyapitiya, attributed the price increase to shortages of poultry feed, claiming the Government and relevant authorities were responsible for the situation.
He said maize imports have been completely suspended, while domestic maize production is insufficient to meet the industry’s requirements.
According to Rathnayake, the use of alternative feed ingredients, including rice, has affected poultry health and digestion, resulting in a 20-30% decline in egg production.
He also alleged that chemicals and medicines used in animal feed by some traders had caused the deaths of large numbers of poultry, leading to significant losses for farmers and a further decline in daily egg production.
Rathnayake said the industry’s concerns have been repeatedly raised with the authorities, but no effective measures have yet been taken to address the issues.
