The National Packaging Centre (NPC) of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) recently conducted an awareness workshop on “Packaging of Food Products” for exporters and potential exporters, with the aim of enhancing their knowledge on packaging solutions that meet both local and international market standards.
The NPC, established under the EDB, serves as a national platform for the promotion and development of the packaging industry in Sri Lanka. It supports a diverse group of stakeholdersincluding exporters, manufacturers, designers, SMEs, women entrepreneurs, students, and research institutionsby fostering collaboration with government agencies and industry partners. The NPC plays a pivotal role in strengthening the packaging sector and supporting the sustainable growth of agricultural exports.
The awareness session, held at the EDB premises, was specifically designed to educate participants on the critical aspects of food packaging. The key objective was to raise awareness on best practices in packaging food items, thereby improving product competitiveness in both local and global markets.
The session was conducted in collaboration with industry experts from CMC Engineering (Pvt) Ltd and an independent packaging consultant. Over 80 exporters and potential exporters participated in the workshop.
The resource panel featured Mr. W. AbhayaSenavirathna, an experienced Packaging Consultant, and Mr. SanathWanigasekara from CMC Engineering (Pvt) Ltd, who delivered a series of insightful presentations. Their sessions covered key areas such as the importance and functions of packaging, packaging techniques for selected food items, regulatory requirements and labelling standards, as well as a practical overview of packaging machinery used in the food industry, providing participants with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on exposure.
Participants gained valuable insights into the selection of appropriate packaging methods and materials to maintain product quality, minimize waste, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
At the conclusion of the workshop, an evaluation was conducted. Feedback from attendees indicated high satisfaction, with participants commending the expert knowledge and practical guidance provided. The programme was highly appreciated for its relevance and its contribution to enhancing packaging knowledge and capacity among local exporters.
