  • High Commission hosts successful Awareness Session on Market Access for Export Agricultural Products to New Zealand Market

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), in collaboration with the New Zealand High Commission, successfully conducted a pivotal Awareness Session on Market Access for Export Agricultural Products to the New Zealand Market at the EDB premises in Colombo.

The session brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including exporters, producers, Government agencies, and industry professionals.

This initiative aimed to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge of market entry strategies and phytosanitary regulations required for accessing the New Zealand market. With a strong focus on processed food, coconut-based products, spices, fisheries, fresh fruits, vegetables, and other key agricultural exports, the session marked a significant step towards strengthening bilateral trade ties between Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Delivering the opening remarks, EDB Chairman and CEO Mangala Wijesinghe highlighted the promising opportunities available to Sri Lankan exporters in the New Zealand market. He emphasised the importance of aligning local production standards with international requirements to fully leverage the potential of this high-value market.

Deputy High Commissioner of New Zealand to Sri Lanka Isaak Gabriel spoke about the enduring relationship between the two nations, highlighting the mutual benefits of enhanced trade and cooperation. She encouraged Sri Lankan exporters to explore this dynamic market, noting that New Zealand is keen to welcome high-quality agricultural products that comply with its regulatory standards.

The session’s keynote address was delivered by Primary Industries Ministry Senior Market Access Counsellor Dr. Tasha Williams, who presented an in-depth overview of the phytosanitary and regulatory requirements essential for gaining market access to New Zealand. Her presentation provided valuable guidance on certification processes, quality control measures, and compliance protocols.

Following the session, participants engaged in a Q&A segment, where they had the opportunity to raise questions and clarify their concerns about exporting to the New Zealand market. Experts shared their experiences and advice, offering practical insights into navigating market requirements. The event was widely regarded as a timely and informative platform that opened up new opportunities for Sri Lankan exporters.

This awareness session forms an integral part of a series of activities organised by the EDB to create new market opportunities for Sri Lankan agricultural exporters. With continued support and facilitation, Sri Lankan exporters are well-positioned to enter promising international markets such as New Zealand.
