The Ceylon United Business Alliance (CUBA) recently initiated a fruitful discussion with Deputy Minister Cathuranga Abeysinghe regarding reforms on apparel-related tariffs, with particular focus on the adjustment of the Apparel Cess, VAT, and Cess on fabrics.
During the discussion, the Minister highlighted the importance of presenting clear facts and figures on the following areas: Sustainability of the industry – ensuring the long-term competitiveness and growth of the domestic apparel sector; tariff comparison with neighbouring countries – analysing how Sri Lanka’s tariff structure measures against regional competitors, and impact on the economy – assessing the direct and indirect effects of tariff adjustments on employment, exports, and investment.
This engagement marks an important step in addressing key challenges faced by the apparel industry and identifying reforms that would strengthen its contribution to the national economy.
Rizan Jiffery, who is leading the CUBA Subcommittee on Apparel, and CUBA President Tania participated in the discussion.
