Chinthaka Dharmasena joins Commercial Development Co. Board

The real estate arm of Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC, Commercial Development Company PLC has appointed Chinthaka Dharmasena to its Board as a Non-Executive Director.

Dharmasena is a corporate management professional with extensive experience in service operations, supply chain management, and sustainability initiatives, including carbon footprint management. He brings both engineering and business administration qualifications, along with significant international exposure across multinational organisations.

He currently serves as Assistant General Manager – Services at Commercial Bank, a role he has held since 2013, and is a member of the bank’s Corporate Management Team. In this capacity, he oversees the bank’s centralised service operations covering procurement, security, premises and facilities management, and logistics, while also leading the sustainability and carbon footprint agenda within operations.

Commercial Development Company said Dharmasena played a key role in Commercial Bank becoming the first bank in Sri Lanka to achieve carbon-neutral status across its operational scope. He was also part of the Sustainability Steering Team that guided the bank to win the Best Corporate Citizen Award in 2021 and secure the runner-up position in 2024, and led initiatives to establish three green buildings within the bank’s network.

Prior to joining Commercial Bank, Dharmasena spent 17 years at Ceylon Tobacco Company, part of British American Tobacco, where he served as Head of Operations and Head of Supply Chain Management. He was also a member of the British American Tobacco International Audit Team and undertook assignments in the US, Malaysia, and South Africa. He later served as General Manager – Production at Noratel International Katunayake, a Norwegian multinational.

During his tenure at Ceylon Tobacco Company, he led the production function through two collective agreements with trade unions between 2004 and 2010, delivering a 24% improvement in factory productivity and maintaining zero industrial disputes following major restructuring programs. The factory was recognised as a benchmark operation within the BAT Asia region and the leadership team secured several national awards for productivity, quality, kaizen, and safety.

Dharmasena holds an MBA from the Postgraduate Institute of Management and a BSc (Engineering) Honours degree from the University of Moratuwa. He is also an ISO 9000 Lead Auditor and holds professional certifications in purchasing and supply management and supply chain excellence from international institutions. In addition, he has served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Moratuwa and CINEC Campus, specialising in transport, logistics, and supply chain management.
