A two-week local training program on Tropical Food Production and Processing Technologies, jointly organised by the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) and Sri Lanka’s Department of External Resources (ERD), concluded successfully on 28 January 2026 in Kandy.

Conducted from 14 to 28 January, the program marked a significant step in strengthening technical cooperation between Sri Lanka and China in the agriculture sector, particularly in the areas of tropical food production and processing technologies.

Distinguished experts from CATAS delivered a series of technical sessions, sharing global best practices, research-based insights and practical experiences tailored to Sri Lanka’s agricultural context.

The sessions covered innovations in tropical crop management, value addition, food processing technologies and quality enhancement, enabling participants to gain hands-on exposure and deepen their technical expertise.

The program was implemented with the active support and coordination of the Department of Agriculture. Public officials representing a range of agriculture-related Government institutions took part in technical discussions, interactive sessions and knowledge-sharing activities throughout the two-week training, fostering a collaborative and results-oriented learning environment.

Finance Ministry noted that the continued support of the People’s Republic of China, coordinated through the ERD, plays a vital role in advancing Sri Lanka’s human resource development and institutional capacity building.

The successful conclusion of the training program is expected to facilitate the practical application of newly acquired knowledge while paving the way for deeper and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in agricultural sector development.
