The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday (2) approved appointing a stakeholder committee to further review and revise existing labour laws.
The committee will be chaired by the Labour Ministry Secretary and will include representatives from employers, employee trade unions, and other relevant stakeholders.
Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the move is only to analyse the law and not to revise immediately.
There are around 50 labour laws approved by the Constitution from 1923 up to date and it has been identified that the provisions in most of them should be updated to cater the current socio-economic scenario and the work world.
In response to this, the Legal Draftsman has already prepared a draft labour law by consolidating and analysing 13 existing labour laws.
He said the committee will be tasked with examining this draft further and recommending necessary revisions to ensure that labour regulations reflect present-day workplace conditions and Government policy directions.
