The Cabinet on Monday approved the initiation of procurement for a new Aeronautical Message Handling System (AMHS) for Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd., (AASL), as the existing platform approaches the end of its operational life.
Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the project is intended to modernise a critical communications system used for operational and safety-related information exchange among aviation stakeholders both locally and internationally.
The Aeronautical Message Handling System serves as a key component of air navigation operations, facilitating the transmission of operational and safety messages between airports, airlines and aviation authorities.
According to the Government, the existing Air Navigation Handling System operated by AASL is nearing the end of its service life, creating the need for a modern replacement capable of meeting current operational requirements.
Cabinet approved a proposal submitted by Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake to commence the relevant procurement process for the installation of a new Aeronautical Message Handling System at Ratmalana.
The project is estimated to cost Rs. 1 billion and will be financed through the capital budget of Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd.
The Government said the upgrade forms part of ongoing efforts to maintain and modernise aviation infrastructure while ensuring the continued safety and efficiency of air navigation services in Sri Lanka.
