The Cabinet of Ministers has approved submitting new regulations to Parliament requiring imported passenger car tyres and three-wheeler pneumatic tyres to meet Sri Lanka Standards (SLS), in a move aimed at protecting local manufacturers and consumers.
“The Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Ministry recommended introducing import testing methods under SLS for the two categories of tyres, citing the need to ensure a fair competitive environment for local manufacturers and to safeguard consumer safety and security,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing this week.
Acting on the recommendation, the Imports and Exports (Control) Regulations, No. 08 of 2026, were enacted through Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2508/27 dated 1 October 2026, amending the regulations currently in force.
He said as per the amended rules, imported passenger car tyres (HS Code 4011.10.90) must comply with SLS 1212, while imported pneumatic tyres for three-wheeled vehicles (HS Code 4011.90.10) must comply with SLS 1347.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as the Finance, Planning and Economic Development Minister.
