The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved the awarding of tenders worth nearly Rs. 1.5 billion (Rs. 1,458.75 million) for the procurement of cabs and tractors for the Department of Wildlife Conservation, aimed at strengthening field operations including wild elephant management.
Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announcing the decision at the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday noted that the vehicles would be deployed for wild elephant management duties and other field operations carried out by the Department.
“The bids had been called for the purchase of 16 double cabs, 84 single cabs and nine four-wheel tractors, with Cabinet approving the proposal to award the contracts to the lowest bidders,” he added.
Under the approved procurement, the tender for 16 double cabs was awarded to United Motors Lanka PLC at a cost of Rs. 300 million, excluding taxes.
The contract for 84 single cabs was awarded to Toyota Lanka Ltd for Rs. 1.134 billion, while the tender for nine four-wheel tractors was awarded to Diesel & Motor Engineering PLC for Rs. 24.75 million.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by the Environment Minister Dr. Dammika Patabendi.
