The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the disposal of accumulated scrap metal belonging to the state-run Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), awarding procurement contracts worth a total of Rs. 195.89 million to six industrial bidders.
Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced the decision, noting that the approval was granted following recommendations made by the High-Level Procurement Committee.
Under the approved allocations, Ashok Steel Industries Ltd., secured the largest share of the scrap metal, submitting the highest successful bid valued at Rs. 89.42 million. S.R. Steel Ltd., was awarded contracts worth Rs. 47.58 million, while IWW Steel Industries Ltd., secured procurement valued at Rs. 39.43 million.
The remaining successful bidders were Udaya Industries Ltd., with purchases worth Rs. 16.54 million, Kalana Tech Engineering was awarded Rs. 1.69 million, and Ceylon Steel Casting Ltd., which secured contracts valued at Rs. 1.23 million.
“The disposal is expected to help the SLTB clear accumulated scrap material, while generating revenue through the sale of obsolete assets,” he added.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by Transport, Highways, and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake.
