The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to develop a network of connecting roads linking Sections I, III and IV of the Central Expressway with the existing road network in the Western, Central and North-Western provinces.
Under the approved plan, 12 connecting roads with a combined length of 117.68 kilometres will be developed for Section I of the Central Expressway. Another 14 connecting roads covering 83.98 kilometres are proposed for Section III, while nine connecting roads extending 81.36 kilometres will be developed for Section IV.
“The provisional total cost of the project has been estimated at Rs. 104.9 billion,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said announcing the decision at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing last week.
The combined program will provide 35 connecting roads spanning around 283 kilometres across the three sections.
He said the project, scheduled to be implemented during the 2026–2030 period, is expected to improve connectivity, accessibility and traffic flow between major road networks and enhance access to the Central Expressway.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake.
