CAA makes SLS certification mandatory for sanitary towels from October

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has made Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) certification mandatory for all single-use sanitary towels sold in the country, with the new requirement taking effect from 8 October 2026.

In a Gazette issued under Section 12(2) of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No. 9 of 2003, the CAA directed that all locally manufactured single-use sanitary towels must carry the SLSI Product Certification Mark before they can be manufactured, distributed, stored, or sold.

The order also requires imported sanitary towels covered under the relevant Sri Lanka Standards to undergo inspection and obtain approval under the SLSI’s Import Inspection Scheme before being released to the local market.

The requirement applies to products covered under SLS 1732 for single-use sanitary towels and SLS 1748 for single-use ultra-thin/slim sanitary towels.

The CAA said the directive will remain subject to any future amendments made by the SLSI to the applicable standards.

The order was issued by CAA Acting Chairman S.M.D. Suriyakumara.
