Ceylinco Life’s approach to sustainability reflects a shift from compliance-driven ESG frameworks to a deeply embedded business philosophy that shapes how the company operates, invests, and engages with society. As Sri Lanka’s life insurance market leader, the company has positioned sustainability not as a peripheral initiative, but as a central pillar of long-term value creation for policyholders, employees, communities, shareholders, and the environment.
The integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into decision-making across the organisation is central to this approach. From investment strategies to customer engagement and operational processes, sustainability considerations are built into the company’s growth model. This alignment enables Ceylinco Life to balance financial performance with broader responsibilities such as environmental stewardship, financial inclusion, and ethical governance.
One of the most visible expressions of this commitment is the company’s Green Building Network, a nationwide initiative to develop environmentally responsible branch infrastructure. These purpose-built facilities are designed to operate with minimal environmental impact while enhancing efficiency. Many of these branches are fully powered by solar energy, with the ability to generate surplus electricity that can be fed back into the national grid. The buildings themselves incorporate sustainable construction materials, energy-efficient architectural design, and systems that optimise natural lighting and ventilation.
Water, wastewater and sewage management are also integral to these eco-friendly branches. Rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and on-site treatment systems significantly reduce freshwater consumption and environmental discharge. These features are complemented by environmentally sensitive construction practices that minimise disruption to surrounding ecosystems.
Collectively, Ceylinco Life’s Green Building Network represents a practical, scalable model of sustainable infrastructure within the financial services sector. At end 2025, Ceylinco Life had 32 green branch buildings on company-owned land. These buildings had generated approximately 1.12 GWh of solar energy, harvested 3.08 million litres of rainwater and recycled 1.386 million litres of water.
Beyond infrastructure, Ceylinco Life has demonstrated a consistent focus on measuring and managing its environmental footprint. The company has undertaken comprehensive assessments of its greenhouse gas emissions, covering both direct and indirect impacts of its operations. These exercises provide a scientific basis for tracking progress and identifying opportunities for improvement. The company has set measurable targets for reducing its carbon footprint and has already achieved reductions through initiatives such as optimising energy use, reducing paper consumption, and improving fuel efficiency.
On the social front, Ceylinco Life’s sustainability strategy is closely linked to its core business of providing financial protection. By expanding access to insurance solutions, particularly among underserved communities, the company supports financial resilience and inclusion. This is complemented by a range of community development initiatives, including healthcare support for public hospitals, infrastructure improvements in schools, and outreach programmes like free medical camps that address local needs across the country. More than 2,000 people benefit annually through the Ceylinco Life ‘Waidya Hamuwa’ programme, at least 50 per cent of them women. Since the programme’s inception, over 150,000 people have received free diagnostic tests and consultations with doctors.
Additionally, the company has built and donated classrooms 89 schools to date and helps maintain them, contributing significantly to improved access to quality education for children across communities.
Employee wellbeing and development form another important dimension of the company’s social agenda. Structured programmes for leadership development, digital upskilling, and talent management ensure that the workforce is equipped to meet evolving industry demands. The company has also placed emphasis on increasing the participation and empowerment of women within both its corporate and sales teams, reflecting a broader commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Governance underpins all these efforts. Ceylinco Life maintains a strong focus on transparency, ethics, and regulatory compliance, supported by robust risk management frameworks. ESG oversight is embedded within corporate governance structures, ensuring accountability at board and senior management levels. Sustainability performance is monitored through defined policies and reporting mechanisms, with increasing alignment to emerging global standards in ESG disclosure.
Innovation plays a critical role in advancing sustainability objectives. The company’s investment in digital transformation has enhanced customer experience while reducing reliance on paper-based processes and improving operational efficiency. At the same time, its participation in green financing initiatives, including investments in renewable energy projects, demonstrates a commitment to supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Ceylinco Life’s contribution to sustainable economic growth is therefore multi-dimensional. The company’s products provide financial security and continuity when families face the loss of their primary breadwinner or the financial burden of serious illness. By protecting families and businesses, generating employment, supporting national development through responsible investments, and empowering communities, the company extends its impact well beyond the insurance sector.
Looking ahead, the company says its focus remains on expanding renewable energy adoption, increasing the number of green branches, and further reducing environmental impact. Strengthening ESG reporting, enhancing climate risk management, and deepening community engagement are also key priorities. In doing so, Ceylinco Life is not only reinforcing its leadership in the industry, but also setting a benchmark for how sustainability can be integrated into the very fabric of corporate strategy.
