The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved the launch of a procurement process to select consultants for the Electricity Sector Strengthening and Renewable Power Consolidation Project, backed by funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The project aims to address rising electricity demand by upgrading the transmission and distribution networks managed by the Lanka Electricity Company Ltd., (LECO) and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
Key initiatives under this project include:
Upgrading the Kelaniya Grid Power Station to enhance electricity supply capacity Strengthening the central voltage network with a new 33kV electricity supply for Kelaniya/Negombo and Kotte/Negombo areas
Converting parts of Kelaniya and Kotte/Nugegoda into underground cable networks for better reliability and reduced outages
Implementing an automated reprocessing system for the 11kV networks in Kotte, Nugegoda, Moratuwa, and Kalutara Introducing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to improve network automation and efficiency
The recommendation furnished by the Power and Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody to inaugurate the procurement process for selecting appropriate consultants to implement activities of the said project was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
