The first commercial-grade Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was unloaded at Colombo Port yesterday, marking a milestone for the energy transition in Sri Lanka.
A container ship berthed on 20 May carrying the BESS units that will anchor the first BESS project in Sri Lanka by Galilee BESS Ltd., a subsidiary of WKV Hydro Group, a leading renewable energy developer in Sri Lanka who were awarded the Galle and Matara sites, which are expected to be connected to the national grid within a few months, providing much support to the National System Operator (NSO).
Sri Lanka’s national grid has long navigated the twin pressures of intermittent renewable generation and peak demand volatility.
Every MWh of dispatchable battery storage brought online is a concrete step towards a more stable, resilient grid, one better equipped to serve households, businesses, and the broader economy with reliable, clean power.
The BESS technology supplier, Sungrow Power of China, is a leading manufacturer of energy storage systems, having a presence across the world.
The specialised project logistics are handled by Expolanka Project Logistics.
