The Government today issued guidelines on how Vesak celebrations should be carried out given the COVID-19 pandemic currently affecting the country.

The Health and Indigenous Medical Services Ministry emphasised on the need to adhere to health sector guidelines and social distancing measures when carrying out religious observances and Vesak celebrations. Temples are advised to encourage the public to follow religious programs from home and must ensure social distancing takes place during any programs to be held at temples. Temples are also advised to avoid organising giving alms, meditation programs, dansals, pandols, processions, and other programs that will encourage crowds to gather.

Chanting of pirith and sermons can be broadcasted over loudspeakers, the statement said.

The public is advised to follow religious programs from home and not leave the house unnecessarily, for instance, to enjoy Vesak decorations. They are also not to organise Vesak zones, dansals, and pandols, but can put up lanterns and decorations at home.

Vendors who sell lanterns and other decorations as well as raw material can carry out sales as long as they adhere to health sector guidelines and ensure social distancing is maintained. These operations will be checked by Public Health Inspectors.
