4000 Navy personnel at Welisara camp to be tested in batches for COVID-19

The Sri Lanka Navy has isolated close to 4000 sailors and 194 families residing at the Welisara Naval Station as a precautionary measure following advice from health authorities, the Navy said in a press release today.

According to the Navy, sailors who were in touch with those who tested positive for the COVID-19 virus yesterday will be subjected to PCR testing on a priority basis.

Sailors who were in touch with the infected personnel and were on leave have been recalled to the camp for testing. Those who were not in contact and are on leave have been ordered to remain at home.

“Given the circumstances, the Navy initiated an institutional quarantine program with immediate effect, under the advice of health authorities, when the first sailor tested positive,” the press release stated.

According to the Navy, the Walisara Naval Station has 194 family quarters located within the camp.

"Thus, Sri Lankans need not fear for the health and safety of the sailors as action has been taken to conducted the necessary tests and those infected have been hospitalised for treatment," the Navy release stressed.
