In an era where climate change and biodiversity loss pose critical global challenges, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts has set an inspiring example of environmental stewardship. The Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project, was recently honoured with the Best Project Sustainability Award at the Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Awards 2024, demonstrating how corporate responsibility and innovative sustainability practices can drive tangible change.

Combining science, community engagement and a commitment to long-term ecological health, this initiative was launched as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ broader ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework and its efforts in halting and reversing biodiversity loss.

A vision for long term impact

The vision for the Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project extends far beyond planting trees. The project tackles critical challenges such as biodiversity loss, carbon sequestration and habitat rejuvenation. Guided by scientific expertise and inspired by the Sinharaja Rainforest, it has already exceeded expectations by planting over 20,000 trees, with a goal of reaching 30,000 by the end of 2026.

Each step, from the careful selection of indigenous flora to systematic monitoring, demonstrates a methodical approach involving scientific expertise and private-public partnerships to rebuilding natural habitats and ensuring long-term impact. The project aligns with Sri Lanka’s National Biodiversity Action Plan 30x30, which commits to conserving 30% of the country’s land and ocean by 2030. Of the nine national priorities outlined, improving the protection of wet-zone ecosystems is a key focus, further demonstrating the project’s importance.

Collaboration: The foundation of success

At the heart of the project’s success is collaboration. Partnerships with organisations such as Ruk Rakaganno and the Forest Department of Sri Lanka, alongside the invaluable support of the John Keells Foundation – the CSR entity of the John Keells Group, have created a powerful network of stakeholders dedicated to achieving shared environmental goals.

By working closely with these partners, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts has demonstrated that meaningful progress in sustainability can only be achieved through collective effort. This model of collaboration aligns seamlessly with Sri Lanka’s national and global goals, including Sri Lanka’s target of increasing forest cover by 2030.

Empowering communities and engaging guests

What truly sets the Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project apart is its ability to inspire and engage people across all levels of society. Local communities have become active participants in the project, contributing through activities such as site preparation, invasive species removal and the establishment of 17 community nurseries. These initiatives not only provide economic benefits to the region but also create a sense of shared ownership and pride in the restoration process.

Guests staying at Cinnamon properties close to the Sinharaja Rainforest are also invited to contribute through volunteer tree-planting activities, nurturing a deeper connection with Sri Lanka’s natural heritage. This engagement transforms sustainability from an abstract goal into a tangible, shared experience.

A holistic approach to sustainability

Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ success in sustainability extends far beyond the rainforest project. The company has embraced a holistic approach that balances environmental, social and economic sustainability. Integration of sustainability practices are embedded at each of its properties in both Sri Lanka and the Maldives, to drive environmental consciousness into its operations.

These efforts are amplified by the passion and dedication of its colleagues, with over 832 colleagues and volunteers actively participating in tree-planting and other restoration activities. By nurturing a culture of sustainability within the organisation, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts ensures that its environmental initiatives are not only impactful but also deeply rooted in its identity.

Setting benchmarks for the hospitality industry

The award-winning Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project also serves as a replicable framework for other organisations seeking to contribute to environmental restoration. By combining private-sector innovation with scientific expertise and community involvement, the initiative demonstrates how businesses can achieve both ecological and economic benefits.

Moreover, the project sets new benchmarks for sustainable practices in the hospitality industry, proving that corporate leadership and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.

Creating a legacy of hope and action

As Sri Lanka continues to face environmental challenges, the work of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts offers a path forward. By aligning its efforts with global sustainability goals, including the 30x30 initiative and engaging stakeholders at every level, the company is not only restoring rainforests but also transforming mindsets. The recognition at the Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Awards 2024 is a demonstration to the company’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.

The Cinnamon Rainforest Restoration Project is more than just an environmental initiative—it is a movement that embodies hope, action and accountability. By restoring the land, empowering communities and nurturing collaboration, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts is redefining what it means to be a sustainable business in today’s world.

It stands as an inspiring reminder that together, we can rebuild ecosystems, protect biodiversity and create a legacy of sustainability for future generations.
