47President Maithripala Sirisena requested all university student associations not to engage in activities which disrupted their education until solutions were provided to any issue as currently the Government was engaged with all relevant parties to provide a satisfactory solution to private medical colleges.

He made these remarks during a meeting with representatives of university student associations over issues related to private medical colleges, which was held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday.

During the meeting the representatives of university student associations presented their detailed proposals to be taken into consideration when resolving the issue.

The President further said that the Government would take steps to solve the issue in the future after consulting with every party, including student associations, deans, the Sri Lanka Medical Council, the University Grant Commission and the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine.

The representatives of university student associations pointed out that even though they raised their voices against this private medical college during the previous regime, they did not receive any attention. They added that they expected the present Government to provide a just solution to this issue to further strengthen the country’s free education.

Recently, President Maithripala Sirisena discussed this issue with the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) and the Sri Lanka Dental Association to get their opinions.
