Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thilanga Sumathipala will lead Sri Lanka’s delegation to the 133rd Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Assembly, scheduled to commence on 16 October in Geneva, Switzerland. The sessions will end on 21 October.
MP Ranjith Aluvihare will be the deputy leader of the delegation.
Also accompanying the Deputy Speaker will be the Deputy Minister of Petroleum and Hydro Carbon Gases, Anoma Gamage, and MPs Bimal Ratnayake and Shanthi Sriskandarajah.
Secretary General of Parliament, Dhammika Dissanayake, will be the Secretary to the delegation.
Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala will address the Assembly on the topic ‘Democracy in the Digital Era and the Threat to Privacy and Individual Freedoms.’ MP Bimal Ratnayake is billed to address the Young Parliamentarians Forum while State Minister Anoma Gamage and MP Shanthi Sriskandarajah will participate in the meeting of Women Parliamentarians.
Some of the sessions include discussions on human rights of Parliamentarians as well as a general debate on the moral and economic imperative for a fairer, smarter and more humane migration.
