The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the Embassy of Israel in New Delhi signed an agreement during this week to extend the operations of the Israel Business Development Office in Sri Lanka (IBDO), which was initially set up in 2012. The IBDO, a joint initiative of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the State of Israel was established in order to facilitate trade, investment, technology transfer, services and tourism between Sri Lanka and Israel and commenced operations on 3 May, 2012. Since establishment, the Office has successfully facilitated over 25 business and trading tie ups between Sri Lankan and Israeli business entities. Those business tie ups have come in the areas of agriculture, home security devices, bio medical equipments, precious stones, consultancy, electronic devices, garments and knitted ware. The latest renewal agreement was signed by Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Secretary General/CEO Harin Malwatte and Embassy of Israel in New Delhi Minister Counsellor/Head of Administration Haim Levy. The setting up of the IBDO strengthens the Sri Lankan Government’s latest efforts taken to enhance the bilateral relationship with Israel, which was further amplified by the visit of the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the country in January 2014. The IBDO’s efforts are highly backed by the Sri Lankan Ambassador in Israel Sarath Wijesinghe.
