Discussions explore cross-border investment opportunities

The Sri Lanka Agripreneurs’ Forum (SLAF) recently had a high-level meeting with Republic of Maldives Agriculture and Animal Welfare Minister Dr. Maryam Mariya, during her official visit to Sri Lanka.

She was accompanied by Director General of Agriculture Hussain Faisal and High Commissioner Masood Imad. The meeting was held at the High Commission of the Republic of Maldives in Colombo 4, in the presence of other Maldivian officials and leading figures from Sri Lanka’s agribusiness sector.

The discussion focused on investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector and how strategic partnerships could benefit both countries. Notable areas of interest included tourism-centric cultivation models, development of the poultry industry, and opportunities for mechanisation through investment in agricultural machinery and equipment. The Maldivian delegation indicated readiness to offer tax incentives and regulatory support for aligned investments.

This collaboration comes at a crucial time. The Maldives faces significant challenges in food production due to limited arable land and high dependence on imports, with over 90% of food being imported, according to the FAO. As the Maldivian government works toward greater food security and sustainability, Sri Lanka, known for its agricultural expertise and capacity, has emerged as a key regional partner. Sri Lanka’s strengths in tropical agriculture, value addition, and agri-tourism align well with the Maldives’ emerging needs.

Through this partnership, Sri Lankan agripreneurs have the opportunity to support and participate in agricultural development projects in the Maldives, while also attracting reciprocal investment into Sri Lanka’s agribusiness ecosystem.
